OLD CITY. Authorized by governemnt during Washington's first term. 1.5 million coins are turned out of here every hour. The coinage process involves melting raw metal, rolling the metal to coin thinness, punching out blanks, then pressing the designs into the coins. Machines automatically sort the coins 5,000 at a time, then drop them into bags destined for Federal Reserve Banks. Areas of the tour having pre-recorded commentary to help you understand more about how the coins are made. No free samples here! |
