        Description: DOWNTOWN. Built almost a hundred years ago, this stately, impressive basilica serves the oldest Catholic parish in Minneapolis. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the church features entrance towers made of white Vermont granite and a copper dome that rises almost 200 feet. The sanctuary floor is made of pink Tennessee marble, and the nave is one of the widest in the world. Visitors should be respectful of masses being conducted; self-guided tour brochures can be found at the back of the sanctuary.

        Description: SHAKOPEE. At Canterbury Park, you'll find horse racing from May until Labor Day, not to mention gaming and simulcasting throughout the year. A children's play yard is available too, as are picnic facilities, restaurants, and concession stands. Racing novices can take advantage of seminars on betting before the start of each day's events. When the ponies aren't running, there may be rock concerts, motorcycle races, and swap meets.

        Description: UPTOWN. This system of lakes and parks provides an outdoor spot in the midst of the city and is referred to by locals as simply "the Lakes." Private surroundings for swimming, fishing and canoeing are available, and joggers and in-line skaters enjoy treks around Lake Calhoun, the most urban of the lakes. Water enthusiasts find plenty of opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and windsurfing, and Lake Harriet offers families an ideal place to picnic, swim, or ride the "Queen of Lakes" paddlewheel boat. Outdoor concerts are held in the bandshell during summer months.

        Description: DOWNTOWN. At 32 stories and 447 feet, Foshay Tower seems small by today's skyscraper standards. However, the tower, built in 1929, was the tallest building in Minneapolis until 1971, when it was eclipsed by the 775-foot IDS Tower. Today, Foshay Tower is a well-preserved remnant of graceful, 1920s-era Art Deco style and is home to the W Hotel Minneapolis.

This whimsical, pastel yellow-and-blue pedestrian bridge, designed by Siah Armajani, features graceful supporting arches and an enclosed private walking space, complete with poetry to read on the journey. It crosses 16 lanes of bustling I-94 traffic between downtown, Loring Park, and the Lowry Hill neighborhood.

        Description: Loring Park is Minneapolis's much smaller answer to NYC's Central Park and is among the city's most active spots. It's part of the greenway that links downtown Minneapolis, the Walker Art Center and Sculpture Garden, and the Guthrie Theater. Loring Lake is also a perfect setting for picnics, shuffleboard tournaments, horseshoes, tennis, or people-watching. In the winter, the frozen lake is ideal for ice skating.

        Description: SOUTHWEST MINNEAPOLIS. Encompassing several horticultural areas, this space is well-known locally for its rose garden, the nation's second-oldest municipal rose garden. Located on Lake Harriet, the garden promotes quiet, contemplative time away from the hustle and bustle of an urban environment. Meticulously cared for, the garden features more than 4000 plants and 250 species. Two fountains border the garden; the bronze-and-marble Hefflefinger Fountain is from the Villa Montalto near Florence, Italy. Rock gardens and perennial gardens are also featured.
