Description:
OAKLAND. The center of the University of Pittsburgh's campus is a 42-story Gothic-styled structure known as The Cathedral of Learning. The entrance to the educational facility is a three-story room with slate floors, columns, arches, and a massive fireplace. Wrought-iron gates separate the Commons Room from the banality of elevators whisking students to classes above. People in the Commons Room murmur in low tones as if they're in a library, making it a great spot to read, people-watch, and listen to tunes. |

Description:
LAWRENCEVILLE. At one time, this industrial neighborhood was home to steel mills and a Civil War-era arsenal for the Union Army. Now it's a place where young artists and old Pittsburghers live peacefully side-by-side. In recent years, 20-somethings have been buying up inexpensive row houses and restoring them to their original glory. The business district has embraced this transition too, and hip clothing boutiques now sit just doors down from family-owned taverns that have been serving famous fish sandwiches for decades. |

Description:
FRIENDSHIP. Like most metropolitan areas, Pittsburgh is a city of concrete and steel with a complex urban landscape. The creative people at The Sprout Fund have developed a plan to make this backdrop more aesthetically pleasing by peppering the city with public art. An example of Sprout's efforts, The Two Andys, is a mural that pays tribute to native sons Andy Warhol and Andrew Carnegie. Created by Tom Mosser and Sarah Zeffiro, it can be seen Downtown at the corner of Strawberry Way and Smithfield Street. Currently, 31 colorful murals are displayed across the city (more are in the works), making a day in traffic seem like a trip to the museum. |
